Helping Retailers Sell More Through Better Glass Door Refrigeration Solutions

The similarities and differences between glass door walk-in cooler and traditional cold storage

  1. Similarities

Refrigeration Principle

The refrigeration principles of the two types of cold storage facilities are basically the same. Both of them employ a steam compression refrigeration cycle (compressor – condenser – expansion valve – evaporator), using the refrigerant to absorb heat in a transformed manner to lower and maintain the temperature inside the storage facility.

Insulation materials for the storage container

The storage container is constructed by assembling polyurethane (PU/PIR) sandwich panels, which helps reduce heat loss and maintain a stable low temperature inside the container.

Basic Functions

Whether it is a glass door walk-in cooler or a traditional cold storage, they are all used for the low-temperature storage of food, medicine, or reagents. Both can be designed as refrigeration (0 – 10℃) or freezing (-18 – -35℃) as per requirements.

Thermal control system

Both models are equipped with temperature controllers/digital temperature controllers or microcomputer control systems, which can achieve setting of temperature, automatic start-stop of the compressor, defrost control, etc.

The basic requirements for the usage scenarios are the same.

They all need to consider ground load-bearing capacity, ventilation and heat dissipation (for the outdoor unit of the machine), power matching (220V / 380V), drainage, and regular defrosting maintenance.

  1. Main Differences

We visually present their differences through a table.

Essential differences:

Glass-door walk-in cooler is more about “display and convenient picking”;

Traditional cold storage is more about “high insulation, large storage capacity, and freezing”.

Through the above comparison, we have found that glass-door walk-in cooler is more suitable for the following scenarios:

  • Supermarket, specialty fresh food store (display and storage of beverages, dairy products, cooked foods, fresh-cut fruits)
  • Hotel/restaurant open kitchen, bakery (requiring quick stock retrieval and frequent small-volume access)
  • Locations with requirements for store image and product display effect
  • Gas station convenience store that mainly uses refrigeration, with high daily opening frequency but short single-time duration.
